We once sought to receive and discovered the thrill of giving...

Once a student at TCF, Almas Khushi is now 23 years old and is teaching at the TCF Minhala Primary School. She comes from a family of four sisters and three brothers, all of whom studied at TCF schools. Almas had a difficult childhood, with both parents being uneducated and her father also being handicapped. Despite the odds, she studied conscientiously at TCF and through dogged determination she was given a TCF scholarship for her college education and Bachelors Degree in Computer Science. She became the first member of her family to attain an education to this level. Almas’s aspirations however do not stop there; she is currently studying for a Bachelors Degree in Education and hopes to go on to do a Masters in her specialist field, Computer Science.

We hear Almas’s thoughts on going from TCF student to TCF teacher…

How did you feel when you were a student at TCF?
Coming from a Government School where I studied till Year 8, I can say that everything I know today is because of TCF. From etiquettes to religious values; everything has been taught to me by my teachers at TCF. I also learnt to speak English at TCF and had I been at a Government School, I wouldn’t have learnt anything.

Have you always wanted to become a teacher?
Yes I’ve wanted to be a teacher since I was a little girl. From a very young age, I’ve been tutoring my siblings every day after school.

Did you want to work at TCF from the very beginning?
Ever since I wanted to become a teacher, and everything I have studied is because of TCF as they provided a scholarship for my Inter and Bachelors Degree. After my Bachelors, I decided to give something back to TCF and my fellow villagers.

Was there a specific TCF teacher that inspired you to choose this as your career?
My teacher Ms. Rahat Lubna in Minhala (TCF secondary school) was my favourite teacher. She was also our friend and often had a solution to our domestic problems, which we felt comfortable discussing with her. She always supported and encouraged us. I know that I want to be a teacher just like her.

What is it like to teach at a TCF school?
It’s extremely good. I’ve seen TCF teachers making a difference in students’ lives, which motivates me to do the same. TCF helps us to become better teachers by helping us with training and further education.

How do you feel that a TCF education changes the lives of its students?
In a village, where everyone is uneducated, TCF nurtures a child by not only giving them an education but teaching them about everything from washing hands to telling the truth.

How do you motivate your students?
I try to be their teacher and friend so that they listen and take advice on board.

Which subject do you most enjoy teaching?
I’ve completed my Bachelors in Computer Science so I like to teach I.C.T a lot.

Can you tell us about one very memorable student of yours?
There was a shy and timid boy in my primary class who didn’t want to study and used to miss school a lot. I started talking to him and slowly helped him to understand the importance and value of education. He is now performing to his potential and is in fact the best student at school.
